Part 3 100 Days of Flowers

Good afternoon everyone! 20 drawings in and I’m not slowing down!

In the past when I’ve taken on drawing challenges, I would get overwhelmed thinking of what to do and start second guessing myself. I would lose energy and find myself flagging and missing days and in most cases I would end up giving up before completing the task.

So far this hasn’t happened in this challenge, but I’m only two tenths in, so I shan’t get ahead of myself! What’s different this time though, is that I have such a specific focus but the genre is so wide that I can accommodate to my time and mood. If I have more time, I can create something more detailed and maybe more realistic or hyper decorative, if I only have an half an hour or so I can limit it to really simple line work. I’ll definitely keep this in mind for any future challenges.

The past week I’ve been focusing on white pen and black paper illustrations, and my goal for the week was to experiment with foliage. I loved working with the white pen on black paper because of the contrast this creates, also without colour it means I can focus on the line work and creating areas of depth and interest with the line work and pattern.

I started to experiment more with the foliage, but I don’t think I pushed it quite enough so it’s something I want to carry on exploring this week.

Speaking of, I’m going to start using a mix of coloured pens and markers on white paper as my medium for this next ten illustrations. I’m really looking forward to playing with bright colours again, they just make my heart so happy, but I also want to find out if that can help me expand on the foliage experimentation.

I’ve been told several times throughout my life, by professionals and tutors that my colour choices and palettes are “awful”, “acidic” and “garish” so this has always been an area I work on to better understand and to find what works for me. I love bright colourful illustrations with complementary palettes and intense clashing colours, I guess I just need to learn more about how to balance this in my own work.

Right lovely people, time to get crack -a- lacking

See you next week!
